History
Several American Indian tribes lived in the Longmont area thousands of years ago. The dry climate made it difficult to live in the area for an extended period of time, and it was uninhabited for hundreds of years. Longmont was established in the early 1870s when a group of prominent Chicago citizens wanted to establish a new town in Colorado. They sold memberships in the new town and bought 60,000 acres of land with the money. The town built on this land was named Longmont after nearby Longs Peak. Irrigation ditches were built to bring water to the dry soil in the area. Farmers planted fruit trees, wheat and peas. Businesses built in Longmont in the late 1800s included a flour mill and a vegetable cannery. A beet sugar factory was built in the early 1900s.
