HISTORY

Denver started out as a gold mining town, experiencing a significant boom during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of the middle 1800s. The city was formally incorporated in 1861, becoming the county seat of Arapahoe County the same year. The construction of a transcontinental railroad passing through the city guaranteed its strategic position as the regional center of the state of Colorado. Denver eventually became the state capital in 1876.

Like many mining towns, Denver’s gold rush didn’t last. Fortunately for Denver, it managed to avoid a major decline with a steady stream of new gold discoveries, albeit at significantly lower amounts than during its peak. Denver’s economy gradually shifted from mining to transportation, commercial, and industrial activities. In addition, Modern Denver ranks among the nation’s biggest livestock suppliers, and a major destination for skiing and other winter sports.

PARKS AND RECREATION
