HISTORY

Erie was one of the first coal-mining towns in the state of Colorado. Its central location also made it a major transportation artery, with multiple stagecoach companies passing through the town to deliver freight, mail, and passengers to and from Denver and Laramie and the rest of the country. With continued growth, the town of Erie was finally incorporated in 1874.

Erie was the linchpin for major changes to coal mining practices, inspiring the National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933, which automatically recognized coal mine worker’s unions all across the United States. The improved rights and working conditions set by the Act continues to benefit coal mining employees across the country today. In 2000, the town erected a Coal Miner Memorial to celebrate the workers who made the town – and the country – prosper.

The County of Erie would continue to grow and develop into a large urban area well into the 20th century.
