HISTORY
The city and county of Broomfield was born in the last quarter of the 1800s, with the opening of a US Post Office station in 1884. Its location between Denver and Boulder ensured its role as a transportation hub for those traveling to and from both cities, as well as to other places in Colorado and across the US. Not long after, homesteaders began filing claims, and by 1900, Broomfield’s local farming community began to flourish, establishing its own business district that included a cheese factory, smithing shop, and flour and feed mill.
Broomfield’s transportation legacy continued to grow in the 1900s with the construction of the Denver Boulder Turnpike in the 1950s. In 1955, the Turnpike Land Company purchased the land around the turnpike with plans of building a business district that will be part of the Denver Metro area. Broomfield Heights, as the place came to be known, signaled the area’s shift from agricultural to suburban use.
