HISTORY
The place we now know as Commerce City began as burial grounds. Riverside Cemetery was founded in 1876, followed by the Rose Hill Cemetery in 1892. At the turn of the century, Immigrants from Germany, Scandinavia, Italy, and Russia began to settle in the area, developing wheat fields, dairy farms, and livestock ranches. Agriculture was the area’s main economic activity until industry encroached and an oil refinery was built in 1930.
The place became known as Commerce Town when Denver annexed the area. The town was eventually incorporated in July of 1952, and a decade later, after annexing part of the nearby town of Derby, Commerce Town officially became a city, and with it, the name change.
